Five easy road trips around Coolangatta

Ocean Plaza Resort

Long lazy days on the beach are a wonderful way to pass the time at Coolangatta, but if you’re feeling more adventurous why not take a road trip and discover the secret sites and spots of the Gold Coast and northern New South Wales? Your self-contained apartment at Ocean Plaza Resort comes with secure undercover parking, so it’s easy to bring the car or hire one nearby and take off to explore this beautiful region. Here are five easy road trips around Coolangatta, the Tweed and the Gold Coast you’ll love.

  1. Bangalow

This charming village in the hinterland west of Byron Bay is famous for its monthly markets on the fourth Sunday of every month, but is a delight to visit anytime. An easy 50-minute drive down the Pacific Highway and you’ll find a treasure trove of cafes, boutiques and galleries.

  1. O’Reilly’s

About an hour and 40 minutes from Ocean Plaza Resort via one of the Gold Coast’s most scenic drives you’ll find O’Reilly’s, a popular spot in Lamington National Park. You’ve heard of the O’Reilly’s Treetop Walk, but did you know there’s so much more to do? Try the Wishing Tree Track, a 2.4km return walk through beautiful rainforest scenery or for a longer walk, Moran’s Falls a 4.6km, two hour return walk incorporating waterfalls, sub-tropical flora, a lookout and picnic area.

  1. Beechmont

Located in the Binna Burra section of Lamington National Park, Beechmont offers quaint country style sights and stunning scenic landscapes like Lip Falls. If you’re not feeling up to the 3km return hike try the scones at Lamington Teahouse further down the road at Binna Binna Lodge.

  1. Lennox Head

Take a dip in the soothing tea-tree waters of Lake Ainsworth, see if you can spot a migrating whale and stroll up to the lighthouse before returning for ice cream on the beach. Less crowded than its big cousin Byron Bay, Lennox Head is about an hour from Coolangatta and a relaxing place to spend the day.

  1. Tallebudgera Creek

Just a short 20 minute trip up the Gold Coast Highway lies Tallebudgera Creek in Burleigh Heads that offers a calm cove for swimming, paddling, stand up paddleboarding and picnics. This one is a guaranteed people pleaser!
