Six winter beach activities to wear out the kids

Family walking on beach

With our mild, sunny days and refreshing sea breezes there’s nothing like winter on the Gold Coast. The bite of the summer sun is gone, and so are the crowds, so it’s the ideal time to carve out a place on the sand, see if you can spot some migrating whales, and let the mid-year blues melt away.

At Ocean Plaza Resort our one, two, and three bedroom self-contained apartments include a full sized kitchen, bathroom and internal laundry, offering a home away from home feeling that’s perfect for a relaxing winter getaway.

This school holidays bring your kids to the beach and try out our six winter beach activities they’ll love!

  1. Beach scavenger hunt

This takes just a little organisation, but it’s a creative and fun way to enjoy a sunny winter’s day and let little ones explore their world.

Work out a list of items players must find – it could be a certain type of shell, seaweed, or filling a bottle with sand. Whoever finds the most items on the list wins. You can even be prepared and hide a few specific things ahead of time for the kids to find. Stuck for inspiration? Visit Pinterest for hundreds of beach scavenger hunt ideas.

  1. Fly a kite

Take advantage of the winter winds and get some air! Running on the beach, launching a kite and watching its brilliant colours float against a blue winter sky is relaxing not just for kids, but for grown ups too.

Didn’t bring a kite? Pick one up from Leading Edge Kites in Burleigh.

  1. Get in the water

Be brave, take the splash and enjoy a winter ocean swim. The Coolangatta Surf Lifesaving Club hosts an ocean swim every Sunday at 8.30am. All abilities are catered for and you’ll be given some soup to warm you up afterwards. For more details see their Facebook page.

  1. Build a sand castle

Tried and tested, this traditional beach activity never gets old. All you need is a little imagination! Instead of a traditional castle get your kids to sculpt animals, objects or people in the sand. And if they do enough running around to find decorations they’ll surely be ready for an early bedtime later on

  1. Beach sport

Whether it’s a Frisbee, beach cricket or volleyball, a casual game is a great way to add extra fun and exercise to a family day out at the beach.

  1. Go fishing

Coolangatta is a wonderful place to fish, whether you rock fish in the area around Greenmount Hill, or head around to the Tweed River you’re sure to stay occupied for hours.

Action Outdoor Hire offers fishing rod, reel and tackle three-day hire for $20.

And if the weather turns sour don’t forget we’re attached to the Strand at Coolangatta, with its six cinemas, and a short drive away from heaps of other indoor attractions such as funhouse Infinity, ice skating at Iceland and ten pin bowling at Tweed Ten Pin.

What’s on in Coolangatta in June?
